Fourth Grade Science Fair Projects

Fourth grade students are very energetic and their span of attention or concentration is very small. Above that, they want to observe, infer, predict and classify anything taught on science. Learning by doing is a good concept and it registers in their young minds and they can never go wrong in their examinations. For this, a lot of schools conduct fourth grade science fair. Here, all the fourth grade science fair projects will be displayed.

Salt increases the density of water. Add four to five tablespoons of salt in a glass of water stir it nicely and float an egg. Also add little more luke-warm fresh water and check, the egg will float in-between the salt and the water. Try using sugar or flour in the water the egg will sink.

Which water is good for plants can be made as a project by selecting a pot with some seeds; one pot can be watered with tap water, the other pot to be watered with only rain water. Check the growth for seven weeks; the rain water watered pot is better.

Will plants grow with a liquid other than water can be done in an effective project by selecting four pots, Water the first pot with water, second one with vinegar, third one with orange juice and fourth one with milk. The result is the one with water grows the maximum, the one with vinegar dies as it is an acid, the one with orange juice and milk also grows but nowhere near as much as the pure source.

A fourth grade science fair project to test which environment is best for plants. Take three pots, one with sand, one with soil, and one with gravel and put few seeds in each pot, wet them at regular intervals and make a graph, the seeds in the soil grew the maximum.

Classification of mammals -- Mammals are found every where. Polar bears in cold areas, camels in hot areas, moles live under the ground, bats live in caves and flies in the air and dolphins live in oceans. Fur and fat help them to protect themselves in cold regions and they sweat and pant to release their extra heat. A fourth grade science fair project can be made by cutting and pasting picture of mammals and their place of rest.

Sunflower house project: On the ground draw a square and plant sunflower seeds leaving enough space between two seeds all in the perimeter of the square, but don't forget to leave a little space in the front side for the door. Once the sunflower plants grow one inch, plant bean seeds around each sunflower plant. As they grow the beans will climb up the sunflower stalks and create a wonderful playhouse for the children. In this way they learn the characteristics of creepers, flower plants, trees, shrubs etc.

Excellent features of sunflowers are we can get oil, easy to grow and a good bird feeder, Make a sun and a flower and label its uses.

Life cycle of a butterfly - egg, caterpillar, cocoon and then a beautiful butterfly can be made live in your garden.

A Bird house can be made in wood, to encourage birds to come and live. Observe the birds and their habits.

Instincts can be taught in a project form by showing baby birds open their mouth for food, baby turtles know to go to the sea when their eggs hatch.

Children at this age group should be given simpler fourth grade science fair projects to keep them occupied. Once they are occupied and disciplined, teachers job become easier to make them learn and enjoy schooling.

What Causes Anger?

Anger is a strong emotion of displeasure caused by some type of grievance that is either real or perceived to be real by a person. The cognitive behavior theory attributes anger to several factors such as past experiences, behavior learned from others, genetic predispositions, and a lack of problem-solving ability. To put it more simply, anger is caused by a combination of two factors: an irrational perception of reality ("It has to be done my way") and a low frustration point ("It's my way or no way"). Anger is an internal reaction that is perceived to have a external cause. Angry people almost always blame their reactions on some person or some event, but rarely do they realize that the reason they are angry is because of their irrational perception of the world. Angry people have a certain perception and expectation of the world that they live in and when that reality does not meet their expectation of it, then they become angry.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

It is important to understand that not all anger is unhealthy. Anger is one of our most primitive defense mechanisms that protects and motivates us from being dominated or manipulated by others. It gives us the added strength, courage, and motivation needed to combat injustice done against us or to others that we love. However, if anger is left uncontrolled and free to take over the mind and body at any time, then anger becomes destructive.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

Why We Need to Control Anger

Just like a person who is under the control of a street drug---a person under the influence of anger cannot rationalize, comprehend, or make good decisions because anger distorts logical reasoning into blind emotion. You become unable to think clearly and your emotions take control of your actions. Physiologically speaking, anger enacts the fight or flight response in our brain, which increases our blood pressure and releases adrenaline into our bloodstream, thereby increasing our strength and pain threshold. Anger makes us think of only two things: (1) Defend, or (2) Attack. Neither of these options facilitates a good negotiation.

Internal Sources of Anger

Our internal sources of anger come from our irrational perceptions of reality. Psychologists have identified four types of thinking that contribute to anger.

1. Emotional reasoning. People who reason emotionally misinterpret normal events and things that other people say as being directly threatening to their needs and goals. People who use emotional reasoning tend to become irritated at something innocent that other people tell them because they perceive it as an attack on themselves. Emotional reasoning can lead to dysfunctional anger in the long run.

2. Low frustration tolerance. All of us at some point have experienced a time where our tolerance for frustration was low. Often stress-related anxiety lowers our tolerance for frustration and we begin to perceive normal things as threats to our well-being or threats to our ego.

3. Unreasonable expectations. When people make demands, they see things as how they should be and not as they really are. This lowers their frustration tolerance because people who have unreasonable expectations expect others to act a certain way, or for uncontrollable events to behave in a predictable manner. When these things do not go their way, then anger, frustration, and eventually depression set in.

4. People-rating. People-rating is an anger-causing type of thinking where the person applies a derogatory label on someone else. By rating someone as a "bitch" or a "bastard," it dehumanizes them and makes it easier for them to become angry at the person.

External Sources Of Anger

There are a hundreds of internal and external events that can make us angry, but given the parameters of a negotiating situation, we can narrow these factors down to four general events.

1. The person makes personal attacks against us. The other side attacks you along with the problem in the form of verbal abuse.

2. The person attacks our ideas. The other side chops down our ideas, opinions, and options.

3. The person threatens our needs. The person threatens to take away a basic need of ours if they do not get their way i.e. "I'll make sure you'll never work in this city again."

4. We get frustrated. Our tolerance level for getting things done might be low or affected by any number of environmental factors in our lives.

Factors That Lower Our Frustration Tolerance

1. Stress / Anxiety. When our stress-level increases, our tolerance for frustration decreases. This is why there are so many domestic disputes and divorces over financial problems.

2. Pain. Physical and emotional pain lowers our frustration tolerance. This is because we are so focused on taking care of our survival needs, that we do not have time for anything or anyone else.

3. Drugs / Alcohol. Drugs and alcohol affect how our brain processes information and can make a person more irritable or bring forward repressed emotions or memories that can trigger anger.

4. Recent irritations. Recent irritations can also be called "having a bad day." It's the little irritations that add up during the course of the day that lower our tolerance for frustration. Recent irritations can be: stepping in a puddle, spilling coffee on your shirt, being late for work, being stuck in a traffic jam, having a flat tire.

Recognizing the Physiological Signs of Anger

By recognizing the physiological signs of anger, we can attune ourselves to know when it is time to take measures to make sure that our level of anger does not get out of control. Here are some symptoms of anger:

1. Unconscious tensing of muscles, especially in the face and neck.

2. Teeth grinding

3. Breathing rate increases dramatically

4. Face turns red and veins start to become visible due to an increase in blood pressure

5. Face turns pale

6. Sweating

7. Feeling hot or cold

8. Shaking in the hands

9. Goosebumps

10. Heart rate increases

11. Adrenaline is released into your system creating a surge of power.

Am I Right to be Angry?

Damn right you are. You have your own perception and expectation of the world that you live in and when the reality that you live in fails to meet your expectations, then yes you have the right to be angry. Afterall, if everyone thought alike, then the world would be a pretty dull place to live. You are going to run into situations that you don't enjoy. You are going to run into people who don't respect your views and ideas. The feeling of anger is totally justified according to your beliefs and so don't repress or deny those feelings.

Having to right to feel angry does not mean that you have the right to lash out in anger by attacking the other person. You can't change the views of other people to conform to your own because, like you, they have their own right to uphold their view of the world. The best thing you can do is recognize your anger and focus it on the problem instead of your counterpart.

Key Points

Being angry or frustrated is just like being under the influence of a drug. It prevents you from rationalizing and thinking logically.

Anger is caused by a combination of an irrational perception of reality and a low frustration point.

Anger is a natural response and you have every right to be angry, but you must learn to keep that anger in check during a negotiation because once you react in any negotiation, then you lose the agreement.

How to Make Homemade Sausage With a Meat Grinder

Making homemade sausage is not as daunting and difficult as it may sound. Sausage is really just a mixture of ground meat, fat, salt, pepper, other spices, herbs, onions, peppers or other diced foods. Have you ground your own hamburger meat? If so, making homemade sausage is just a few easy steps before grinding the meat.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

The best sausage balances the ratio of meat, fat and spices. Store bought sausage can contain up to 50% fat, however, you can reduce the fat amount to 25% to 35%, if desired, and still produce great tasting sausage. Sausage fat below 20% is not recommended as a certain amount of fat is needed to impart good flavor and help bind the meat links together.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

Equipment Needed

A meat grinder. If desired, a sausage stuffer and sausage casings. You do not have to use a sausage stuffer if making patties, however if making links, a sausage stuffer aids in producing well formed, tight links. Sharp knives Large bowls

Sausage Preparation

Put your meat in the freezer for up to 1-2 hours to get the meat very cold. Sausage is typically made with pork meat, but lamb, beef or wild game can also be used. Cut your meat and fat into 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch slices. Put the slices into a bowl surrounded with ice to keep the meat cold. After cutting all the meat, mix the meat, fat and your desired spices together. Put the meat mixture back in the freezer for up to 30 minutes. Grind the meat mixture in your meat grinder. Use a medium to coarse grinding plate. If making sausage patties, form the ground meat into the patties and refrigerate before use. If making links, place a casing onto the sausage stuffer's tube. Leave a tail of at least 6 inches off the end of the tube for tieing off later. Let the sausage come out of the sausage stuffer in one long coil, you will make the actual links after you have extruded all of the meat. Make the links. With two hands, pinch off what will become two links and tightly spin the casing at both ends. Work the links until they are pretty tight. Tie off the excess 6 inches of casing that you previously allowed for. Refrigerate the links until you are ready to cook and eat.

Slow Cooker and Crockpot Recipes for Chicken Cacciatore and Chicken With Veggies

If you and your family like chicken meals, (personally, in full disclosure here, I refuse to eat poultry but my family all loves it) try these two recipes in your slow cooker or crockpot. These are great family dinner recipes. And the cooker is your best friend in the kitchen. Whether you are a cook who works outside the home or just has a busy schedule, you must learn to count on your slow cooker or crockpot.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

SLOW COOKED CHICKEN CACCIATORE
4 - 4 1/2 lbs chicken pieces, skin removed
1/4 cup flour
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cups thinly sliced fresh mushroom
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
2 cups Italian-style canned diced tomatoes
1 tsp Italian seasoning
2 tbsp chopped fresh basil
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/4 tsp salt

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

Using paper towels, pat chicken dry. Place flour in a pie plate and coat chicken pieces shaking off the excess flour.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook chicken over medium-high meat until browned, about 6 minutes on each side. Remove the chicken from the skillet and place in the slowcooker (or crockpot).

Place the mushrooms in the skillet and cook for approximately 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the chicken in the cooker. Add the bell pepper, onion, carrot, diced tomatoes, basil, pepper, and salt.

Place the lid on the cooker and cook on the high setting for 3 1/2 hours or the low setting for 5 to 6 hours.

HARVEST CHICKEN AND VEGGIES
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
3/4 lb small new red potatoes, scrubbed and cut in half
2 cups baby carrots, cut into thirds
2 celery stalks, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 large onion, chopped
1 can (4-oz) sliced mushrooms, drained
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp dried sage
1 cup chicken broth
1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

In a medium-size bowl combine the chicken, 2 tablespoons of the flour, half of the salt, and the pepper. Add the mixture to the slow cooker or crockpot. Stir in the potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, mushrooms, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of the thyme, the sage and chicken broth. Place lid on cooker and set on high for 4 hours or on low for 6 hours.

In a small bowl, stir the butter and the remaining tablespoon of flour together until a paste forms. Push the chicken and veggies to one side in the cooker and whisk the paste, remaining salt and remaining thyme into the cooker. Cook for 1 more hour to thicken.

Note: This recipe has an equal number of protein and carbs per serving which makes it a good diabetic dish.

Enjoy!

Muscle Building Tips - Add 1 Inch to Your Arms in a Week - Part I

Most people who want bigger arms focus on training their arms. Makes sense, right? The problem is that your body will only allow so much disproportionate growth.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

In other words, if you don't train your big muscles like you legs and back hard enough to make them grow, your arms will only get so big. So if you want big arms you need to train your legs and back hard.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

There's another complication with focusing on your arm training. Most people end up over training and not only do their arms refuse to grow, they get smaller and weaker which is the total opposite of what we're trying to accomplish.

Why does this happen? Most people, when trying to specialize on their arms, increase the volume and intensity of their arm training. The problem is that their biceps and triceps already get a lot of work via back, chest and shoulder training.

So how can we focus on our biceps and triceps without falling into the trap of over training? By training smarter and harder and not necessarily working longer.

I'm always amazed at the arm training routines I see in the magazines; 5 or 6 exercises for the biceps and the same or more for the triceps, and a total of 15 to 20 sets of more. That's nuts!

Here's a great weight training routine that can add an inch or more to your arms in a week. That's three total workouts. For this week, you'll do a full body routine, working your entire body three nonconsecutive days per week. For example, training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Set totals don't include warm ups

Squat - 2 x 10 - 12

Pullover - 1 x 10 - 12

Dumbbell Flye - 1 x 10 - 12

Dumbbell Upright Row - 1 x 10 - 12

Arm Specialization Routine

Triceps

Dip - Bodyweight x 1 rep

Tricep Pressdown 1 x 10 - 12 (6)

Biceps

Pullup - Bodyweight x 1 rep

Barbell Curl - 1 x 10 - 12 (6)

That's it! Doesn't look like much, does it? Ah, but let me explain how you perform the arm specialization routine.

For the dip and the pullup, you perform the 1 rep in super slow. And I mean super slow. Perform the positive portion of the rep first and take 30 seconds to complete it. Then perform the negative and again take 30 seconds. The entire rep should take 60 seconds.

The next exercise (either the tricep pressdown or the barbell curl) is done in superset fashion. No rest for the wicked, or those that want big arms.

Do a set to failure, failing around 10 to 12 reps. Then, drop some weight and immediately do a drop set that gets you around another 6 reps. That's it. The work is very short but brutally intense.

Now, a lot of you may not be able to complete a 60 second rep on the pull up or the dip. That's fine, do what you can and try to extend the time in each of the next two workouts. For those of you that are super strong (or if you get strong enough and go back to this routine later) you can try the ultimate one rep dip or pullup.

In this version you start with the negative instead and you do the following:

Negative - 30 seconds

Positive - 30 seconds

Negative - 30 seconds

Now, some keys to making this work. Obviously, you have to be ready to work extremely hard. That shouldn't be a problem, as the routine is very, very short.

If you've been working out hard for awhile, or doing very long workouts, you'll probably get the most out of this routine by staying out of the gym for at least a week. Not easy, I know. I just did this myself after going all out for about 13 weeks. It was tough but I knew I needed it.

You also have to get enough nutritious calories. Have a high carb, high protein drink right after your workout.

Minimize any other physical activity. Get 6 meals a day with lots of protein and calories.

Baked Catfish Recipe - Tips For Baking Catfish

The most searched for catfish recipe on the internet is for baked catfish recipes. Obviously, this means it is the favorite of many catfish "connoisseurs". While not my favorite, I will share with you my favorite version of the classic baked catfish recipe, which is baked catfish with mushroom wine sauce. Not only is this a dish that tastes great, it's also quick and easy to prepare, and adds a touch of elegance sure to appeal to even the most picky of eaters.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

Baked Catfish with Mushroom Sauce Recipe

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

The ingredients needed are:

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

1 tablespoon of butter or margarine. I prefer butter.

1 cup of fresh, sliced mushrooms

1/4 cup of chopped green onions

1 minced garlic clove

1/4 cup of white wine

1 tablespoon of fresh, chopped parsley

2 catfish filets, 4-6 ounces each

Salt and pepper to taste

Paprika

Cooking spray or vegetable oil

Lemon slices

1. First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Then, heat the vegetable oil and melt the butter or margarine together in a heavy skillet. Next, add the mushrooms, onions, and garlic, and saute' until mushrooms become translucent.

2. Add the white wine, and bring to a simmer. Then, remove pan from the heat and stir in chopped parsley.

3. Now we'll clean the catfish by rinsing under cool, running water, followed by patting it dry with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and paprika to taste on both sides.

4. Place the fillets in a baking dish lightly coated with cooking spray or vegetable oil. Pour the mushroom-wine sauce we prepared earlier over the fillets. Bake for 10-20 minutes or until the catfish is no longer translucent at the thickest part, and flakes easily when tested with a fork.

5. Garnish with parsley and lemon slices if desired.

Catfish Baking Tips

One of the greatest challenges when baking catfish is dryness. Sauces and basting help prevent dryness by keeping the fish moist, as well as making the fish more flavorful. In the recipe I've shared here, the mushroom-wine sauce fulfills this need wonderfully.

The main test for doneness, no matter how long the catfish has cooked, is flaking. When done, catfish will flake easily when tested with a fork, and will be opaque. To gauge cooking times, aim for 10 minutes per pound, or 10 minutes per 1 inch of thickness.

It is important to test for doneness often. Once it's done, it's done. There is no "uncooking" an overcooked fish, so pay attention. And remember, some stoves cook at different temperatures, even when set at the same temperature. Therefore, when cooking in unfamiliar territory, pay extra attention.

Grow Your Penis Safely - Natural Enhancement Can Add 4 Inches in Under 1 Month

I've been working in the male enhancement industry for quite some time now, and I get the same questions over and over again. One of the most popular questions is the issue of safety - men everywhere want to know how they can increase their size in the safest way possible. And why shouldn't they? You don't want to have to take any risks with your health and with newer, more natural techniques you don't have to! It makes my job a whole lot easier because I now know that when I recommend a natural techniques to one of my clients, it will work and will ensure 100% safety - there really hasn't ever been another method like it!

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

So, you are now probably wondering how it all works? It works on two basic levels: the internal and the external. I shall go through both of them in more detail now...

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

The Internal Part

I have to say that this is by far the most important part because it is this that will actually work to create the growth. When I am talking about the 'internal' side of things, all I mean is that this is where you need to pay close attention to what is going on inside your body. If you do not do this, you can't possibly grow. Since no other method actually works in harmony with your body, this goes a long way to explaining why they constantly keep on failing! To get your internal state correct, you need to copy the process of puberty. Once you do this, you will realise that it is possible to turn back the hands of time and revert your body to this period once again. What you will experience is the same growth as back then - that's why it's so safe.

The External Part

This is all about making your manhood grow as quickly as possible and the best way to speed up the growth is by incorporating exercises into your daily routine. Using a good natural enhancement program may be beneficial here as it will teach you all the techniques you need.

And that's it! Two simple and safe techniques that will guarantee you a bigger penis!

Most Powerful Laptops 2010/2011 - The Best of the Best

When the conversation turns to which laptops are the most powerful on the market, the answer is usually one of the high-end gaming models from manufacturers like Alienware, Asus and MSI. These computers not only excel at graphic intensive games, but their high-end processors and graphics cards make them excellent choices to run programs for photo and video editing, as well as viewing high-definition video. Powerful also usually equals large, and many of these computers have screens that are at least 17 inches which makes them not necessarily the best choice when it comes to mobile computing.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

One of the high-end computers on the market right now is the Asus G73. This laptop features a true 1080p 17 inch screen and comes with an Intel Core i7 processor. Graphics are the duty of either an Nvidia GTX 460 M or an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics processor. Another top-of-the-line computer that can handle just about any task thrown at it is Alienware's M17x. This computer, like most top-of-the-line units, comes standard with a 64-bit version of Microsoft's Windows 7. Since it is an Alienware unit, it is an attention getter even when it is closed.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

Coming in at about an inch and a half smaller than the Alienware and Asus models is the 15 1/2 inch MSI GX 660. This unit features an Intel core i5 processor and has an ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics processor. All three of these manufacturers also offer a few different computers that come in similar configurations as these. Since they are premium units, consumers should expect to pay a premium price for them. These units are definitely a few levels above the standard notebooks that most people pack around with them. In fact, laptops like these can go toe to toe with some of the best desktop units out there.

Manufacturers like Dell, HP and Sony all make computers that reach the premium levels of these units. Apple also builds some premium laptops, but since they operate on Apple's own Mac OSx operating system, it is somewhat difficult to compare them side-by-side with Windows units. A savvy consumer can buy laptops cheap, even one as high-end is these, if they know where to buy. When considering a premium laptop purchase, it is important for every consumer to not only look for laptop deals but to compare specifications in order to ensure that they are getting the best value for their dollar.

Christmas Sales Bosch 1810PS 4-1/2-Inch Paddle Switch Grinder with Lock-On Switch Overview

Grinders lack the glamour of routers, say, and compound miter saws, but when it's a grinder you need, we don't think there are too many better choices out there than this one. "You get what you pay for" is, we think, even more true in the world of tools than elsewhere, and this is definitely a case in point. We've never met a Bosch tool that lacked quality, precision engineering, ergonomics and power, and this grinder is no exception. Our favorite feature on this one is definitely the paddle switch, not just for comfort and convenience, but for the ultimate in safety and control. We're not big fans of the lock-on button, because it negates the safety feature of the paddle switch, but we know some of you wouldn't have it any other way.

Grinders lack the glamour of routers, say, and compound miter saws, but when it’s a grinder you need, we don’t think there are too many better choices out there than this one. "You get what you pay for" is, we think, even more true in the world of tools than elsewhere, and this is definitely a case in point.

We’ve never met a Bosch tool that lacked quality, precision engineering, ergonomics and power, and this grinder is no exception. Our favorite feature on this one is definitely the paddle switch, not just for comfort and convenience, but for the ultimate in safety and control. We’re not big fans of the lock-on button, because it negates the safety feature of the paddle switch, but we know some of you wouldn’t have it any other way.

As for user ease, it’s fabtastic. It weighs in just over 4 pounds, and the balance in hand is supreme. Up against other grinders in its class, the vibration is absolutely minimal, virtually eliminating that unpleasant arm-buzz. Another thing we like about this grinder is its ability to draw power from DC outlets, so if you’ll be grinding welds, this tool is a perfect choice.

The 4-1/2-inch wheel changes out fast, and the guard adjusts without tools. The whole tool says "quality," from the sealed switch to the ServiceMinder™ brushes that automatically shut down the tool when it’s time to change them, ensuring that this workhorse will be with you for a long, long time. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Chicco Stroller

Mexican Crockpot Recipes

I love Mexican food and love using my crockpot, so combining the two makes perfect sense.  Here's a list of some Mexican Crockpot Recipes.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

Crockpot Enchiladas

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

A fabulous dish my whole family loved!

Ingredients:

2 cans shredded chicken breasts
1 cup salsa
1 can enchilada sauce
24 oz can diced green chiles
4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 can cream of chicken soup
14 oz can sliced black olives
2 thinly sliced green onions
10 corn and flour tortillas

Spray crock pot with cooking spray. Mix chicken, salsa, enchilada sauce, green chilis, and soup in a bowl. Cut corn and flour tortillas into 1 inch pieces, mix pieces together. Place a layer of sauce mixture on the bottom of the crockpot. Place a layer of tortillas, then a layer of cheese. Repeat until all the sauce mixture has been used. Top with cheese, olives, and green onions. Cover and cook on low 6 hours. If desired, serve with sour cream, salsa, guacamole, and tortilla chips.

Chicken Tortilla Soup
Easily one of my favorite recipes - a fabulous "throw it in and let it cook" soup. See the notes below for and extra flavorful twist.

Ingredients:

1 ½ pounds shredded cooked chicken
1 drained 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
1 - 10 oz can enchilada sauce
2 medium chopped onions
14 oz can chopped green chiles
2 cloves minced garlic
2 cups water
1 - 14 ½ oz can chicken broth
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp chili powder
½ tsp black pepper
1 large bay leaf
1 tbsp cilantro
1 ½ tsp southwest seasoning mix
1 - 10 oz pkg frozen corn

Spray slow cooker with cooking spray. Mix all ingredients in crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours. If desired, serve with sour cream and baked tortilla strips. For baked tortilla strips, preheat oven to 400*. Lightly brush both sides of tortillas with vegetable oil, cut into strips. Spread on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes.

Notes: For extra flavor, I make this in two steps. First, I put 1-1 ½ pounds of boneless skinless chicken breasts in a crockpot with 1 ½ cups water (or 1 can chicken broth) and Mexican seasonings. (A package of taco or fajita seasoning or southwest seasoning mix works well.) Cover and cook on high 3-4 hours. Remove chicken and shred for soup. Often, I will make 2-3 pounds of chicken to make soup along with shredded chicken tacos or fajitas.

Crockpot Taco Appetizer
Although I serve with chips, this could be a main meal by using hard or soft shelled tacos instead!

Ingredients:
2 pounds ground beef
½ cup water
1 envelope taco seasoning
18 ounce can tomato sauce
1 undrained 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup sour cream
3 chopped green onions
1 cup sliced black olives
1 bag tortilla chips

Spray crock pot with cooking spray. In a skillet, brown meat over a medium flame. Drain and add to crockpot. Add water, taco seasoning, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes. Cover and cook on low 6 hours. Serve with toppings such as cheddar cheese, sour cream, green onions, black olives, and other desired toppings.

Notes: As mentioned, this could easily be a main meal by serving with hard or soft shelled tacos rather than tortilla chips.

Halloween Yard Haunts

Bowl Turning - Getting Started

In the winter of 2010 I decided to pursue a private study of bowl turning. I read every book I could find and watched YouTube videos over and over before I purchased my Nova DVR XP lathe, a 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch Crown bowl gouge, a parting tool, a large scraper, a Makita right angle drill, belt sander, orbital sander, grinding wheel, Sthil chainsaw, buffing wheel, sanding discs, sand paper, CA glue, walnut oil, lacquer, beeswax, rags, wood to build a heavy duty mounting surface for the lathe and sand bags to stabilize the table. I never took woodshop nor did I have any previous experience turning bowls. I had built a 2 story log cabin in Canada and always nurtured a love for wood and trees.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

I ordered most of my turning equipment from the wood turners catalogue and have been amazed ever since on how the tools and equipment lived up to my expectations and arrived lightning fast.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

At the same time that I built my lathe table (per Nova DVR specifications downloaded from the internet), I set out to find sources for logs. I placed free ads on craigslist asking for large logs which resulted in my acquiring some very large Dutch Elm logs and some medium size Cypress logs. I also called various firewood suppliers, most of whom did not have whole logs available or wood that was favorable to wood turning. However, one tree cutter did contact me and he expressed a true love of wood and interest in helping me to find good wood. I drove out to his storage yard where I found large diameter logs of cedar, oak, pecan and massive slabs of black walnut that his father had saved and protected.

On another occasion I stopped by a firewood yard in the foothills and looked out upon an endless supply of huge rounds of ash, oak, and species unknown. I soon had a good stockpile of logs which I stacked in the shade of an avocado tree in my backyard and loosely covered with a plastic tarp. I kept the logs off the ground with pieces of firewood and timber I had lying around. On average, excluding the black walnut which was expensive, I could fill my Ford Explorer with large chunks of wood for to . In comparison, upon visiting stores that supply bowl blanks, I found that most resale blanks were both small and expensive. One blank could cost as much as a truckload of un-split firewood.

Not having a garage to house my equipment, I built a small shed using plywood and a tarp to protect my work area. I use a small BBQ cover to protect my lathe within the shed. My tools are readily available from a shelf below the lathe bench.

I purposely avoided purchasing costly equipment like a band saw or unnecessary tools like grinding guides, etc. My intention was to create natural looking rustic bowls using the least amount of equipment as possible.

There are so many opinions on what equipment and tools are needed, how to manipulate your tools, how to sharpen your tools, what is the right wood to use, and what constitutes an acceptable bowl...I decided to just plow through it, do my own thing, and learn as I go. The chain saw, lathe, bowl gouge, sander and grinder are at the heart of everything I do.

I began looking at other artist's bowls in artist shops and online. I saw the most beautifully finished hollow forms sitting behind glass on shelves...only 0.00! I also found web sites with really nice bowls for sale for such a low price that I can't imagine how the artist could pay for their turning supplies. These observations left me perplexed and, again, I just decided to do my own thing and see what happens.

My lack of experience and utilitarian interest in bowl turning caused me to think that my work would be sneered at by seasoned professionals. And so it was to my amazement that several of my bowls, sold privately or through silent auctions, were pieces that had visible sealed cracks, surface irregularities or warped sides. That's when I realized that I don't need to please other artists; there are people who find imperfections most interesting and I must admit that when fruit or a salad mix is placed in a bowl with various imperfections, the overall look is very appealing. I've had friends remind me not to move too far away from the rustic appeal of my first pieces and I have taken their suggestion to heart.

The Lathe

I love my Nova DVR XP. I looked at many other models including ones that I could not afford and inexpensive ones that required moving the belt across pulleys to change the turning speed. Now that I'm actually turning bowls I can't imagine using anything but a constant variable speed direct drive lathe that allows you to change speeds with the touch of a finger on a digital pad. This doesn't mean that the DVR XP is absolutely perfect...large out-of-round blanks can cause my heavy work bench to jump around at higher speeds, the safety mechanism that stops the machine during a significant "catch" can kick in too easily with large blanks turning at lower speeds, and there have been minor issues like a nut coming loose inside the housing. I've learned to correct or work around these issues with great satisfaction. I have NOT tried the add-on support for turning bowls over 16 inches in diameter but would imagine there will be some taxing of the lathe and my work station. The DVR was under 00.00 and was my only large ticket purchase. It was delivered by freight to my driveway and the delivery man helped me lift it onto my work station.

Why is it so important to be able to change speed quickly? You'll know the answer to that question when you make your first bowl. Initial gouging, finish gouging, scraping, sanding, applying a finish, buffing...you'll use a wide range of speeds to perform all these tasks.

Breaking the Rules

There's nothing wrong with being a strict disciplinarian. There's nothing wrong with proper training and education. It's in my nature to go-it-alone and a big part of the fun is learning as you go and experimenting with your own ideas. As an example; Everything I've read and watched on video about turning bowls showed mounting the bowl to shape the outside of the bowl, then remounting the bowl to shape the inside of the bowl. This involves using a faceplate and then using a chuck for the remainder of turning. I was amazed to learn that I could cut both the outside and inside without ever removing the faceplate and still NOT have screw holes in the bottom of my bowl. Why didn't anyone mention this?

Using firewood rather than expensive exotics, I am at liberty to increase the depth of my bowl blank by the length of screws used to secure the faceplate. I shape the outside of the bowl, including 75% of the bottom, leaving only that section of wood at the faceplate un-tooled, avoiding cutting too close to the plate. I then, without dismounting the blank, shape the rim and inside of the bowl and follow shaping with sanding and polishing. I then use a parting tool and finally a hand saw to separate the extra wood at the faceplate from the bottom of the bowl. A belt sander will level out the bottom.

Another rule breaker involves turning green or wet wood. I've found that the results depend on the wood, the amount of moisture and your willingness to deal with warping issues. Available data shows that you can turn a rough version of the bowl with even wall thickness and set the bowl aside for a few months in a cool area. I've read that you can put the bowl in paper bags until moisture is no longer evident on the bag. I am, at this point, too impatient to wait a few months and the only time I tried the paper bag trick, the bowl was covered in mold when I brought it out.

When I turn a damp or wet wood, one of three things occurs. 1) The bowl warps. One of my most treasured pieces was a deep warped Dutch Elm bowl. 2) Cracks develop. That's what CA glue is for. It works fantastic and the more you learn to use it the better the results. You can hand rub fine sawdust into the CA glue-soaked crack, apply additional thin CA glue then a dusting of more fine sawdust with a light rub to even things out. You will be able to sand the filler in less than an hour. I CA glue and/or fill all visible cracks immediately during and after turning and as needed during the drying process. OK, if you want to turn precision pieces free of any defects then this is not going to work. 3) The finishing process must be delayed. Lacquer finishes will dull from the moisture. Hardening oils will lock in the moisture. Set the bowl aside until finishing can take place. Depending on the amount of moisture and type of wood this may only take a few days or a few weeks. However, I have been applying a coat of walnut oil on all my green bowls immediately after turning and sanding. I have been sanding the green bowls with 80 thru 400 grit, wiping on a coat of walnut oil, re-sanding with 220 thru 400 grit to take down any raised grain and then setting the bowl aside. The longer the bowl is set aside the more chance that the bowl will warp and, thus, you will not be able to remount the bowl on the lathe for additional gouging or lathe sanding. 4) Nothing bad happens. I'm stupefied but it's the truth...it's happened many times. I turn a damp bowl, finish sand it, buff it out, wipe it down with walnut oil, leave it in a cool area of the house, turning it on top of paper bags and the bowl comes out fine. I've even applied coats of spray lacquer shortly thereafter. Ok, the lacquer may dimple or dull if water is evident and further finishing or buffing will be required. I had two bowls develop dark dotted lines under the lacquer finish and I'm having a hard time removing them. I'm now leaning towards letting the bowls dry after sanding, with a single coat of walnut oil rubbed into the wood.

The bottom line: other than some issues with cracks, which I repaired as needed with CA glue (fine, medium or thick), and some warping which I kept or re-tooled to remove, I've turned many really cool looking green bowls without any problem. I turned 3 bowls that were damp or wet in the past week. One has gone oblong, one has rim edge bumps, two are in fine condition. The two that have minor disfiguration were so wet that my face plate was opaque during turning. The two that came out normal, except that I re-turned the rim, were damp but not saturated.

Finishing

I've experimented with walnut oil, which I'm told will not go bad, various hand rub finishes, polyurethane, lacquer, bees wax, carnauba wax, buffing compounds, etc. Lacquer (3-4 coats) gives a hard glossy finish and if you wait a few weeks it will buff out like glass. I use spray cans purchased at 10$ a pop from Rocklers. It took a while to get the technique down, don't be discouraged.

I was buffing the lacquer finish, walnut oil finish, and/or carnauba wax finish out as early as possible but nothing can beat applying the finish and allowing it to harden or set up before buffing. I just received a Beal buffing system that I'm trying out on the lathe. It's unbelievable! There are 3 large thick buffing wheels, a large bar of tripoli compound for taking out fine scratches, a large bar of white diamond for polishing and a thin bar of carnauba wax for finishing. I tried it on a lacquer finished bowl which had previously been buffed using a small wheel, tripoli compound and then carnauba wax. The difference between using separate wheels for each compound and the tripoli, white diamond, carnauba combination was amazing to behold. The bowl has a true glass finish.

Most recently I have been watching Elmer Adams (now deceased) videos on YouTube. The way he finished his large bowls is to soak the bowl in a 4 part Deft clear Danish oil and 1 part Defthane solution in a tub for 12 hours, completely saturating the bowl. He drains off the oil and then applies 5 coats of the same mixture by hand, buffing out each coat with Tripoli compound; using white diamond compound and Renaissance wax on the final coat. No spray, no lacquer...People have told me that a bowl saturated in oils take forever to dry. I am going to try a more conventional approach, applying pure tung oil cut 4/1 with a thinner to promote penetration, followed by 2/1 thinned tung oil applications with 24 hour drying and sanding in between coats.

Spending Money vs. Making Money

My motivation for making bowls is NOT making money. However, I don't want this hobby to be a hole that all my extra cash disappears in. I DO want to sell the bowls I make. When you first start out it seems that you're experimenting with equipment, tools and supplies that keep piling up the charges on your credit card bill. By avoiding purchasing fancy equipment I can do without and refining the turning and finishing processes, the amount of time and effort I put into a bowl is diminishing. Once I know how to select and sharpen my tools for a particular task, how to most effectively shape and hollow out the bowl, and understand the most direct method of developing a nice finish I will have a systematic approach to creating a bowl that others will find pleasing. At this point the cost per bowl will stabilize and I should see the returns grow accordingly. OK, this isn't a one year turn around but I'm in this for the long haul and I love doing it. I told my wife, when I retire, every bowl I sell represents a dinner for two or a night out on the town. I also intend for the returns to pay for supplies including raw wood for turning.

Camping Dinners - 7 Foil Cooking Recipes

Somehow food tastes much better outdoors. Maybe it's the crisp and fresh air. Maybe my appetite is bigger. Maybe it's being able to eat without being interrupted by the phone!

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

The only drawback to camping cooking is preparing and cleaning up. I don't like cooking multi-step recipes or scrubbing smoke-stained dishes in less than adequate dishpans after the meal when I can be watching the sunset.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

That is why my favorite cooking 'pot' is aluminum foil.

Foil cooking allows you to prepare delicous meals in the coals of your campfire and have nothing to wash when dinner is over! Below are 7 of my favorite foil wrap recipes. But first let's go over the basics of tin foil cooking:

Use heavy-duty foil so you don't burn the food and so the packet doesn't tear.Use assembly-line technique, not one foil packet at a time. EPut some butter in the packet so your food won't stick to the packet.Sprinkle seasonings generously. It makes others think you are a pro at this.Double-seal by folding twice to keep the moisture in. When you fold leave air room for heat circulation inside.Don't cook foil packets over roaring fire. A small fire or white hot coals is better.
Tip: For first night, prepare the foil packets at home. When you get to camp, just toss them on the coals.

Here are 7 foil packet recipes: Note: depending on how hot the coals are, it takes generally 20-30 minutes, less for fish or pre-cooked items. Turn every 5 minutes.

Recipe 1. Ham & Sweet Potato

- 1 slice of pre-cooked ham (this can be fresh or canned)

- 1 serving canned yams (about 3 pieces)

- 1 or 2 canned pineapple rings

- 1 to 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

- 1/2 tablespoon butter

Recipe 2. Chicken Potato Packets

- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves

- 4 medium red potatoes, cut in 1/2-inch cubes

- 2 cups frozen green peas

- 1 jar (12 oz.) chicken gravy

- 1 teaspoon salt

- ½ teaspoon dried thyme

- 1/8 teaspoon pepper

Recipe 3. Baby back pork ribs

- 3 pounds baby back pork ribs

- 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

- 1 tablespoon paprika

- 2 teaspoons garlic powder

- 1 ½ teaspoons pepper

- ½ cup water

- 1 ½ cups barbecue sauce

Or just purchase a packet of ready-to-heat Lloyds Barbecue Ribs

Recipe 4. Tuscan Sword Fish

- 1 can (15 oz.) Great Northern or cannellini beans, rinsed, drained

- 1 medium tomato, chopped

- 2 tablespoons prepared pesto, divided

- 2 swordfish steaks (4 to 6 oz. each)

- 2 teaspoons lemon juice

- 1 teaspoon lemon pepper

- 2 lemon slices

Recipe 5. Shrimp Jambalaya Packets

- 1 pound peeled and de-veined medium uncooked shrimp

- 4 cups cooked rice

- ½ pound smoked sausage, sliced

- 1 can (14 1/2 oz.) diced tomatoes with garlic and onions

- 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped

- 3 to 4 teaspoons dried Cajun seasoning

- 1 teaspoon hot sauce

Recipe 6 Mexican Pork Packets

- 4 boneless pork chops, about 1/2-inch thick

- 1 teaspoon chili powder

- 1 cup medium chunky salsa

- 1 can (15 1/4 oz.) whole kernel corn, drained OR 1 package (10 oz.) frozen whole kernel corn

- ½ cup chopped green bell pepper

Recipe 7 Cranberry Apple Sweet Potatoes

- 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch slices

- 2 Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples, cored, thinly sliced in rings

- ½ cup dried cranberries

- 3 tablespoons margarine or butter, melted

- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Have fun foil cooking. Open the foil carefully to avoid a burst of hot steam .

How to Give Your Partner a Prostate Massage

Prostate massage, when performed on a regular basis, can be used as a preventative treatment against prostate cancer. It is good for prostate health in general, and can decrease the risk of prostate enlargement--that is, benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). Prostate massage is also a form of sexual play. Whatever your reason may be, let's say you would like to do prostate massage on your husband or partner. Here is how to go about doing it.

4 1 2 Inch Grinder

First of all, make sure he is okay with having a prostate massage. Let him know the procedure so that he understands what will happen. If he seems comfortable with it, then you can go ahead with it.

Keep your fingernails neat and trim. File off any jagged edges.

Ask your partner to urinate or do a bowel movement before having a massage. It is important that he should be as relaxed as possible. You may want to try a relaxation technique as well.

Clean your hands, use a sterile latex glove, and dab a bit of water-based lubricant on the glove's fingertips. Then gently insert your fingers into his anus. Carefully push them inwards and upwards, against the rectal lining towards his front side. Move your fingers roughly the direction of his navel.

You do not have to push in too far, just a little more than an inch--about 3 cm. Then you will touch the prostate gland, a small round bulb of tissue about the size of a large walnut. Give it a gentle massage by rubbing it lightly along its sides. Do not press hard on the gland's central portion, as that is where some sensitive nerves are located. Do not touch the prostate gland with your fingernails.

At some point, your partner may feel like he wants to urinate, even though he does not have to. That may feel somewhat confusing, but try to reassure him and, if he is okay with it, you can continue.

Your partner will become stimulated and may even ejaculate--but it is all right if ejaculation does not occur, as it doesn't always happen.

And that is how you give your partner a prostate massage.
